Do PUA Techniques Really Work? Science has the answer.

Now and then we get emails from guys who start reading about PUAs and seduction. They look at the concepts of openers, DHVs  and other PUA techniques with a bit of skepticism.

“Does this stuff really work? I mean … seriously?”

Science proves it does.

Research conducted by scholars at the University of Oxford and Zagreb was published in the peer-reviewed journal Evolutionary Psychology (2012, 10(5), pg 899-909.) The scientists state that pickup techniques “are in fact grounded in solid empirical findings from social, physiological and evolutionary psychology.”

In the article “The Dating Mind: Evolutionary Psychology and the Emerging Science of Human Courtship” by Nathan Oesch from the Department of Experimental Psychology at University of Oxford and Igor Miklousic, Department of Individual Differences, Ivo Pilar Institute of Social Sciences, Zagreb, Croatia, the work of Neil Strauss and Mystery are examined as cornerstone foundations of the pickup artist community. Most specifically, they zeroes in on Strauss’s Rules of the Game book as one of the two texts included in his analysis.

The authors analyze how human courtship progresses through three distinct phases:

  1. Attraction is a positive emotional, intellectual and physical evaluation of the other person. (PUA techniques include disqualification, bantering, push & pull and the use DHVs.)
  2. Comfort and Trust is a closer connection and a sense of trust develops between two people. (PUA techniques include finding mutual interests, dreams, goals, fantasies and connecting emotionally.)
  3. Seduction happens after attraction, comfort and trust has been established and intimacy escalates. (PUA techniques include learning how to kiss, touch and become a better lover, exploring mutual fantasies.)

The article is thoroughly researched and cited, with 59 sources included in the references section. It is far from the glowing words of a fanboy author hoping to curry favor with his pickup idols and their respective audiences. The authors acknowledges the ethical concerns that can be raised by pickup techniques used by the wrong person, with questionable motives. And he also points out some pickup techniques that are not currently proven in scientific literature. But on the whole, the authors argue that pickup strategies can be considerably useful to men and women in the social arena. We agree.

“If such practices allow men to approach, attract, and connect with women in similar fashion, we wholeheartedly endorse the ethical practice of such materials for establishing meaningful long-term relationships,” the authors write. Yep – that’s why so many of our students send us emails about getting girlfriends, getting engaged or getting married. If you are now ready to learn more … perfect timing because …
